Our Family Physicians

Family medicine (previously known as family practice), is a division of primary care that focuses on comprehensive health care for people of all ages and disease entity. Family physicians may also be referred to as a “family doctor”, “family practitioner” or “general practitioner”. Family physicians are either M.D.’s or D.O.’s and are Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Our board certified family physicians include Dr. Faarina Khan, M.D.  Dr. Bernhard has been on staff at Fox Valley Medical Associates, (FVMA), since 1985 and has hospital affiliations with Delnor Community Hospital and Presence Mercy Medical Center.  Dr. Mercado has been a part of the FVMA team since 1997 and is a physician on staff at Central DuPage Hospital, Delnor Community Hospital, and Presence Mercy Medical Center. Both physicians are also on staff at area long term care facilities including: Aurora Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Geneva Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Rosewood Care Center, Batavia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Michaelson Healthcare Center, Pine View Care, Greenfields of Geneva, and McAuley Manor.

Like internists, family physicians diagnosis and treat illness, provide preventative care, conduct health risk assessments, provide immunizations, and offer supportive counseling.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, family medicine has a three-step approach to providing healthcare. These steps include: 1) knowledge; 2) skill and; 3) process. At the heart of all family medicine is the patient-physician relationship.

From newborns to seniors, family physicians are dedicated to treating the whole person within the family setting and within their community. With the current focus on “patient-centered home”, family medicine provides lasting and caring relationships with patients and their families.

To better offer the highest quality health care to those within the Kane County and Fox Valley areas, FVMA has assembled a unique medical team with the expertise to address the expanding health care needs of our patients. Our dedicated physician group includes family physicians, internists, infectious disease specialists, and nephrologists.
