Our Nephrology Specialists
Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that involves the study of normal kidney function, kidney problems, the treatment of kidney problems and renal replacement therapy (dialysis and kidney transplantation). A Nephrologist, or kidney doctor, specializes in the diagnosis and management of kidney disease. These physicians work with their patients in the management of hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes complications, epidemiology (causes and effects of health conditions) of diseases and infections by identifying risk factors for diseases and offering preventive care. Nephrologists, also known as kidney doctors, provide nutritional management for prevention and treatment of kidney diseases.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, each year nearly 1 in 9 adults in the United States are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and 20 million more are at increased risk. The American Diabetes Association also concluded that diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the U.S. with nearly 26 million adults and children living with the disease. Also, an additional 79 million have pre-diabetes, placing them at increased risk for developing type II diabetes.
